The dominant medieval helmet during much of the 15th century,
the Armet gradually evolved into the first truly international
style of helmet, the medieval close helmet.
Armets
were built of a snug-fitting bowl that came to just above the
ears, fitted with cheek plates that attached by hinges to this
bowl.
At an
early date, close helmets developed a feature that distinguished
them from Sallets. A bevor was shaped to the chin and joined
with a front neck guard that overlapped on the skull, to form a
Gorget.
Then an additional layer of steel was added across the brow
along with a visor to fill in around the nose and eyes to make
an exceptionally functional closed helmet.
