When the Civil War broke out in 1861, neither the
North nor the South was prepared with enough weapons. Decades of relative peace
had left limited stockpiles of small arms which meant not every soldier had a
weapon at the start of the war.
Purchasing agents for the Union and Confederacy began buying up every rifle they could find and shipping them back to American
soldiers. American rifle and gun manufacturers including Sharps, Colt, Remington, and the United States armory at Springfield
began quickly expanding weapon production to meet the demands of
both sides.
